How To Make CBD Oil?

If you are interested in making your own CBD oil, you are at the right place. We are here to answer all your questions, and give you a step-by-step guide on how you can make this versatile oil to use in your edibles, lotions, creams, or to use it as it is.

Why Would You Want To Make CBD Oil At Home?

CBD oil is used by people for different reasons, but it can be quite expensive to buy such a small amount of product. That is why making CBD oil at home is a great idea for someone on a budget. With the right guide, equipment and ingredients, you will find that it is a very easy process. Your end product might not be as high quality as a professionally manufactured product, but you will still experience the same relaxing and healing effects with your homemade CBD oil.

Not only is making CBD oil at home a cost-effective way, but it is an interesting process to do. You will learn exactly how CBD is made and be able to brag to your friends about how you were able to create this healing compound all on your own.

How To Activate CBD

To activate CBD, you will need to go through a process called decarboxylation. To do this, the raw cannabis must be heated slowly and systematically. This is a delicate process because if it is under heated, the CBD compound will not be evenly activated and if it is overheated, the CBD compound can be destroyed altogether.

The usual way CBD is activated is by smoking it in a joint. But to make CBD oil, you must heat up your cannabis flowers in an oven, or a slow cooker to activate the CBD compound. There are other types of special equipment, such as a precision cooker, which can be used to heat your Cannabis.

Guide To Making Home-made CBD Oil

Before you start making CBD oil, it is important to note that the CBD oil you will be making must be infused with some type of carrier oil. Here is a selection of carrier oils you can use:

  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Ghee
  • Butter

What Will You Need?

Here is the list of items you will need:

  • 7 to 10 grams of activated (decarboxylated) cannabis, loosely ground
  • 1 cup of carrier oil of your choice
  • Cooking thermometer
  • A stainless steel bowl placed onto a saucepan filled with water or a double broiler
  • Cheesecloth (organic and unbleached for best results)
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Glass bowl
  • Storage container, such as a glass jar with a lid
  • Food-grade gloves
  • A few grams of raw cannabis (optional)

Instructions

Follow these (6) six simple steps to make your CBD oil:

StepsInstructions
Step 1Take your stainless steel bowl and place it into a saucepan (or use a double broiler). Add water to the saucepan and place it on the stove. In the stainless steel bowl, add 1 cup of carrier oil. Wait until the carrier oil melts.
Step 2Take 7 to 10 grams of your decarboxylated cannabis and sprinkle this into the melted oil. You can add a few grams of raw cannabis to this mixture if you want.
Step 3This oil should stay heated for 30 to 60 minutes and only be stirred occasionally. Using your cooking thermometer, ensure the temperature stays between 50 °C to 65 °C.
Step 4After 30 to 60 minutes, turn off the stove. Start preparing your fine mesh strainer by placing it over your glass bowl. Inside the strainer, you can spread out your cheesecloth.
Step 5Take your oil mixture and pour it into your strainer. The oil will start soaking through the strainer and cheesecloth into the glass bowl. Wear food-grade gloves to protect you against the heat, and squeeze out the cheesecloth with your hands to get out all the oil.
Step 6Now take the glass jar, and transfer the cannabis-infused oil into it. Ensure it is sealed tightly. Now you can proudly say you have made your own CBD oil!

A Few Tips On Making CBD Oil

As you can see, making your own CBD oil is not a very difficult thing to do, but if it is done incorrectly, your efforts might be in vain. We have compiled some tips you must keep in mind when you decide to make your own CBD oil:

  • When you store your CBD oil, ensure you store it in a dark, room-temperature cabinet or in the fridge.
  • Cannabis has a potent smell when you bake it, so it is recommended that you practice your CBD oil-making process in a well-ventilated kitchen.
  • You can add flavouring extracts to your CBD oil if you are not fond of the taste.
  • Use strains of cannabis which are high in CBD to make your oil rich in medicinal properties.
  • If you are serious about making CBD oil, invest in a precision cooker instead of using an oven or slow cooker to decarboxylate your cannabis.

Types Of Extraction Methods

The three most common types of CBD extraction methods are the following:

Extraction methodDescription
Supercritical CO₂ ExtractionThis is the most efficient way to extract CBD oil. There are three chambers used in this method:First chamber: CO₂ is converted into a liquid by decreasing the temperature and adding pressure. Afterwards, the temperature and pressure are increased. The result is called Supercritical CO₂ and is a state between liquid and gas.
Second chamber: The CO₂ is placed in a chamber with plant matter, where it will separate the oil from the plant.Third chamber: In this chamber, the oil and CO₂ are separated. As a result, you will be left with concentrated CBD oil.
Steam DistillationThis is a process which is relatively easy to do. It is done when steam is used to extract CBD oil from raw plant material. The vapour will then be cooled, and condensed to remove the CBD oil from the water.
Solvent ExtractionThis is a very delicate process which involves soaking plant matter in a solvent. Popular solvents include natural plant oils or alcohol. After it is soaked, the solvent is removed, resulting in a concentrated CBD oil.

Note: Plant matter can refer to Cannabis or Hemp plant matter.

What Type Of CBD Will My Homemade CBD Oil Be?

There are three different types of CBD that can be produced. They are the following:

  • Isolate
  • Broad-Spectrum
  • Full-Spectrum

However, when you decide to make your own CBD oil, you will only be able to produce full-spectrum CBD. Full-spectrum CBD contains all the terpenes and cannabinoids that are present in the cannabis plant. This also means that minor traces of THC will be found in the CBD oil. However, the amount of THC present is not enough to trigger psychoactive effects. It does however have a very “hemp-like” taste.
