CBD oil is created by extracting Cannabidiol (CBD) from cannabis plants and processing it into oil form. CBD is combined with a carrier oil, such as hemp seed oil or coconut oil, to make this oil. CBD oil can then be used as a natural treatment for a variety of illnesses.
But before we descend into what CBD oil is exactly, it is important to know what CBD is and how it is different from THC.

How Does CBD Differ From THC?
There are a few differences between Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). Even though they come from the same plant, Cannabis, they are used for different reasons and have different effects on people.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
- It is found in the flowers and leaves of the cannabis plant
- It is more known for its ability to make the user “high” than its medicinal properties
- THC is illegal to use in various countries
- Can be picked up on a drug test
Cannabidiol (CBD)
- It is found in the peripheral parts of a cannabis plant
- It is rather used for medicinal properties than to get “high”
- CBD is not illegal if it contains less than 0,3% of THC
- Is not picked up on a drug test if the THC level is low (≤ 0,3%)
Types Of CBD
CBD does not only come in one designated type which is used for all methods of consumption. Some products may have different varieties of CBD. When CBD is cultivated, it can be processed into three (3) different types:
- Full-spectrum
- Broad-spectrum
- Isolates
Types of CBD | Description |
Full-spectrum | A small amount of THC, less than 0,3%, is present within this type of CBD and has all the components of the cannabis plant. |
Broad-spectrum | This type of CBD contains all the components of the cannabis plant, except for the THC. |
Isolates | This is a type of CBD that contains no other compounds from the Cannabis plant, and is considered the purest form of CBD. |
Not only are there different types of CBD, but CBD can be used in different products. It is commonly found in:
- Capsules
- Oils or tinctures
- Creams or lotions
- Patches
- E-liquids
There are also many fun ways to consume CBD, such as TOC Fruit Flavoured Gummies or in TOC CBD Cookies, which are full spectrum CBD products. It all depends on the reasons you want to use CBD, and which form you are the most comfortable with.
How Was CBD Discovered?
The first time CBD was extracted from the cannabis plant was back in the 1940s. This was done by Roger Adams, who was a Harvard student at the time. His extraction of CBD from a cannabis plant was only a coincidence, he had no idea what he was busy researching or what the results would be. It was only a few years after this happened, that he and other scientists realised what he had done.
After this historical realisation, the research on CBD expanded and in 1946, Dr Loewe experimented with CBD on lab animals. He found that CBD does not have the same effects as THC in terms of psychoactive effects. And finally, after some time, a scientist named Dr Raphael Mechoulam discovered the chemical structure of CBD. This earned him the title of “The scientist who discovered CBD” and he is still conducting groundbreaking research on CBD today.
The Legality Of CBD Oil In South Africa
CBD oil is legal to distribute and use in South Africa. However, there are some requirements the oil needs to comply with before it can be sold. In May 2019, it was announced that any CBD products that contain less than 20 mg per daily dose are legal to distribute. This means that it is free from the scheduling system of the Medicine Act.
It is also important to note that CBD oil must contain 0,001% of THC or less. If it has more THC than this, the CBD oil is not up to legal standards. The last requirement, CBD oil must adhere to is that it must come from a Hemp plant, and only then will CBD be 100% legal for sale and purchase.
The Benefits Of CBD Oil
CBD oil is known for its healing properties when used for different types of ailments. Here is a list of benefits you will experience when you use CBD oil.
- The main reason people use CBD oil is that it is beneficial in reducing anxiety and symptoms of depression
- It helps to release extreme and chronic pain within the body, for example, pain associated with cancer
- If you are diabetic, CBD oil will relieve some of your complications by reducing high glucose levels
- CBD oil has been known to help prevent neurological diseases
- Joint function will improve and pain will be relieved in people who have arthritis
- CBD oil has to be proven effective with reducing the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- If you have epilepsy, CBD oil can be used to help treat and alleviate epileptic seizures
Can CBD Oil Get You High?
No, CBD oil cannot get you high. Its primary use is not to get high, but to help you relax and treat conditions such as arthritis, anxiety or chronic pain. The THC content within CBD is equal to or lower than 0,3% and this is too little to create a high.
It is normal to think that CBD can get you high, because it comes from the Cannabis plant. The secret is in the part of the plant the CBD is found in. CBD is commonly harvested from the stalks and stems of a cannabis plant, as well as from Hemp, which contains significantly less THC. So, if you are looking for a compound to create a powerful high, your best bet would be to use THC.
